Wind
Supporting the UK’s world-leading wind market
Copper has long supported onshore and offshore wind projects in the UK. The Clean Power 2030 Action Plan is cornerstone of the Government’s commitment to double onshore wind and quadruple offshore wind. We will see significant numbers of projects coming forward.
Copper has supported applications for over 29 wind farms across the UK
This is with the equivalent of 3 GW of power generation, enough to power up to 1.5 million homes. The UK leads in offshore wind and government support for expanding onshore capacity, renewable generation remains essential to achieving our clean energy goals.
The UK has vast wind resources, and government commitment drives the ongoing installation of wind energy to secure supply and meet clean-energy targets. The UK is a global leader in wind power, with over 30 GW of installed capacity and ambitious plans to expand offshore wind to 60GW by 2030. More projects being developed across the country will increase public interest in the whole question of clean power, which in turn will require the ability to communicate a project’s benefits clearly to local stakeholders.
Buchan Offshore Wind
Copper delivered crucial planning communications and engagement support for Buchan Offshore Wind’s proposed floating offshore wind farm. We actively showcased floating wind technology and successfully positioned Buchan Offshore Wind as a developer that was genuinely invested in community interests. This strategic and creative stakeholder engagement yielded a successful consultation project and events that received a warm reception from both the client and the local community. Copper’s proactive approach significantly advanced the project’s development while effectively combating local planning fatigue and building trust.
Enhancing community engagement
Norfolk Boreas Offshore Wind Farm
Copper delivered crucial compliant consultation for the Norfolk Boreas Offshore Wind Farm, a Nationally Significant Infrastructure Project facing high scrutiny and local opposition. We proactively built trust by understanding key audiences and addressed concerns through 31 community events and over 200 meetings with local groups and landowners. By producing clear, accessible consultation materials, we effectively articulated the project’s benefits and encouraged input. Strategic engagement de-risked the planning process, generating a high volume of meaningful feedback, and culminated in a comprehensive consultation report, securing project consent in December 2021.
Securing project consent
Shinness Wind Farm
Copper is actively supporting local consultation on a wind and BESS project near Lairg in central Sutherland. The project brings together the Shinness Estate, local investors, crofters with grazing rights and the wider community. Local stakeholders own approximately 15% of the company, and 18% of local residents have invested in the development. If approved, the project will deliver a £21 million community benefit over its 40-year operational lifespan, funding targeted improvements in Shinness and the wider Lairg Community Council area. The project will also provide financial support to neighbouring community council areas to the north and west, where wind farm development is not possible owing to grid constraints.
