Transmission
Transmission in transition: Bigger, smarter, greener networks
Copper Consultancy has a long history of more than 25 years of supporting electricity and gas transmission clients, supporting the delivery of hundreds of kilometres of overhead lines and pipelines, bringing power and heat to households and businesses across the UK.
Power demand in the UK is growing rapidly, driven by artificial intelligence, digital services, data centres and heavy-industry needs. To meet net zero goals, renewable energy – mainly wind and solar – is expanding quickly, requiring grid connections to deliver clean, sustainable power to communities and businesses.
We’re at the centre of the improvement and expansion of the UK’s electricity and gas networks
We’ve supported key clients, including National Grid, Scottish Power Energy Networks (SPEN), Scottish and Southern Energy Networks (SSEN) and National Gas with their strategic communications and engagement requirements, to deliver:
- over 13 transmission-related DCOs
- over 1237 km of new overhead/underground electricity lines
- over 1375 km of subsea cables
- over 818 km of gas/hydrogen pipeline
- over 38 new substations/other transmission infrastructure.
SP Energy Networks
For over a decade, we have supported SP Energy Networks (SPEN) in planning and delivering pre-application consultation and stakeholder engagement for major infrastructure projects across central and southern Scotland. These include new overhead lines, underground cables, substations and network upgrades, all part of a multibillion-pound investment to increase transmission capacity and meet net zero targets. We help SPEN secure consents for this critical infrastructure through open, proactive engagement that meets planning legislation and gives communities a real voice. Our work ensures local stakeholders can influence key decisions on routing, siting, screening and construction, shaping a greener energy future with meaningful public input.
Shaping a greener energy future
Hinkley Point C
Copper led positive engagement for Hinkley Point C, a key part of the UK’s energy future. In response to strong local opposition, we transformed the communications strategy, shifting from reactive responses to proactive storytelling. By highlighting the project’s benefits and fostering open, transparent dialogue, we built trust with over 10,000 households and stakeholders. A dedicated website, regular updates and a 24-hour contact centre kept, and continue to keep, the community informed and heard. Through strong relationships with local groups, we continue to address concerns, reduce disruption and reinforce the project’s long-term value to both the region and the nation.

Bordon Investment Project
Copper delivered stakeholder engagement for Scottish and Southern Electricity Networks’ (SSEN) £10.6 million Bordon Investment Project, which involved installing 18 km of electricity cabling to support 30,000 local customers. We focused on making stakeholders aware of the project, offered clear and accessible opportunities to engage with the project team and identified potential impacts on the local community. Through targeted communications and engagement activities, we built understanding, addressed concerns and supported SSEN in delivering a major infrastructure upgrade that placed local needs at the heart of the proposal. Our work helped strengthen trust and transparency throughout the project’s planning and delivery stages.
