This month, we kicked off a new major project with our client, SP Energy Networks, where we will provide pre-application consultation and stakeholder engagement support as the project moves through the planning system.

The challenge ahead

With the growth of renewable power generation in Scotland, there has been a significant increase in north-to-south power flows between UK nations. Moving forward, the rate of these power flows and growth is set to continue at pace. As such, Scottish and UK Governments remain committed to increasing renewable energy capacity to help us reach net zero carbon emissions by 2045 in Scotland and 2050 in England.

Yet, the transmission limits on the existing network between northeast Scotland, the south of Scotland, and England are hindering progress with the National Energy System Operator (NESO) being forced to restrict power flows on the network to relieve pressure when electricity generation and European energy imports are high. This comes at a cost, which is paid through consumers’ energy bills. This indicates the strong need for reinforcement of the transmission infrastructure linking Scotland to other UK nations, which would help to limit the power flow restriction costs.

Building better connections

SP Energy Networks is working in partnership with National Grid to develop the Western Link 2 project. This is a high-voltage direct current (HVDC) subsea electricity link connecting the West Coast of Scotland to North Wales, which aims to support power flows between the nations. This is the second Western Link project, with Western Green Link 1 already in operation.

Other HDVC projects are in operation and construction across the east coast of Scotland, including are progressing through the planning system now. We have recently concluded community consultations and hosted a feedback event for Eastern Green Link 4, engaging directly with local residents to gather their insights.

Partnering for success

On Western Link 2, we will provide comprehensive support throughout the planning application process, including tailored pre-application consultation, strategic stakeholder engagement, and targeted communications.
