The UK has an opportunity to do things differently
Spain’s blackout shows what happens when grid infrastructure and planning don’t keep up with the speed of the energy transition.
As one of Europe’s renewable energy success stories, Spain has faced a sobering test of system resilience. In a matter of seconds, nearly 60% of the country’s electricity dropped from the grid and connection failures triggered a total disconnection from France’s network, cutting off vital balancing capacity [1].
The immediate impact was a scramble to restart generation, protect infrastructure and restore services. The longer-term costs are already estimating €1.6 billion lost in just 24 hours [2].
For a country that has made huge progress in decarbonising its electricity system, the outage wasn’t just disruptive – it was symbolic. It’s not a story of renewable energy failing, but of the risks that come when systems are stretched too far, too fast.
When infrastructure falls behind ambition
Spain’s blackout wasn’t caused by renewables, but by a system that was overwhelmed and couldn’t keep up with modern generation.
With high levels of solar and wind flowing into the grid and a limited ability to absorb or redistribute that power meant that the grid became unstable and frequency dropped. Nuclear plants shut down automatically. Pumped hydro and gas-fired generation were quick to respond, but even together, they couldn’t prevent the need for a timely [and costly] phased national restart [3].
The blackout has followed earlier warnings from Spain’s grid operator about the need for system flexibility as renewables increased and projects come online. In hindsight, it seems those concerns were well placed.
And while emergency systems eventually stabilised the grid, the response was reactive. The lack of fast-acting flexibility, system-wide coordination and forward planning was plain and painful to see.
Building a clean, connected, and reliable energy future
Here in the UK, the push toward renewables is no less ambitious. Offshore wind is set to quadruple. Solar, hydrogen, and battery storage are expanding rapidly. And while several legacy nuclear plants are being phased out, plans are afoot for a new generation of nuclear, both large-scale and small modular reactors (SMRs), to provide firm, low-carbon power alongside renewables.
But where Spain’s challenge lay in joining the dots between ambition and infrastructure, the UK is already laying the groundwork for a more joined-up and strategic approach.
Rather than managing different parts of the energy system in isolation, the UK is moving toward a more connected model. Spain’s blackout, like Heathrow Airport’s recent outage or power failures before it, shows what happens when the system is invisible until it breaks.
The public doesn’t need to know how frequency response works but they do need to know that the system they use and rely upon is ready. They need to know that clean energy isn’t a gamble. And that someone is planning ahead.

The UK is better placed than most, but that doesn’t mean we’re immune to shocks. It just means we’re starting from a position of awareness and intent.
