  5. Wales, 2025: Welsh Government’s Offshore Wind task and finish group action plan is published, and Equinor and the Gwynt Glas joint venture (EDF Renewables UK and ESB) sign the first Agreements for Lease with The Crown Estate for floating wind projects in the Celtic Sea, as part of Leasing Round 5.

  5. Autonomous vehicles for inspecting offshore wind farms can reduce inspection costs by up to 70% and cut the revenue loss from turbine downtime by as much as 90% compared to traditional rope-access methods.

Five flagship projects and capacity boosts

  1. Blyth Offshore (2000): First UK commercial offshore wind farm goes live.
  2. London Array (2013): briefly, the world’s largest offshore wind farm—630MW.
  3. Hornsea Project One and Two (2019, 2022): the world’s largest, over 2.5GW combined and growing.
  4. Berwick Bank consenting in Scotland means it will be one of the largest offshore wind farms in the world, with up to 307 turbines and a capacity of 4.1GW, powering up to 6 million homes.
  5. The UK passes the 10GW installed offshore wind capacity milestone in 2022.
