“Politicians and the infrastructure industry need to start talking in the language of benefits at a regional level to realise the potential for growth.” Project promoter at the Bristol event

Copper and Icaro in partnership with Peter Brett Associates this week held roundtable discussions with over 40 infrastructure and housing experts to discuss our ‘Attitudes to Infrastructure’ report findings in depth.

The report, which includes a foreword written by Lord Adonis, makes a series of recommendations for how to build public confidence in infrastructure.

Lawyers, planners, engineers, environmental specialists, project promoters, clients and a host of guests from other disciplines came together to discuss Copper’s report and to help answer some of the most important questions including ‘what next?’ and ‘where do we go from here as an industry?’.

Our two roundtable discussions, held in London and Bristol, raised a range of issues and interesting debates around:

  • The need to tell the infrastructure ‘story’ in a way the public understands
  • Building trust with the public
  • Securing public acceptability and a social licence
  • The role of the National Infrastructure Commission
  • Effective engagement and consultation
  • The need for leadership from industry and politicians
  • How to communicate the benefits of infrastructure in a confident and compelling way
  • How devolution will impact the infrastructure sector
  • The public’s understanding of the planning and consent processes
  • How effective the planning and consent processes at gathering public feedback

A full round up of the ‘Attitudes to Infrastructure’ roundtables, including what industry told us and our plans to build on these findings, will be published shortly – watch this space.
